I have decided to make some changes and see how my clients like going digital. Regular sessions: $40
This includes a single family sessions (mom, dad, children, and grandparents). If additional extended family pictures are desired, please inquire. This is paid the day of your session. This fee covers a one hour session, at a location of your choice, within a reasonable travel distance. Fall and spring are the best time for outdoor photos, so book your session today. This package includes a full copyright release of your images (typically 15 to 20 images) on an individual CD. This copyright release will allow you can make all the unlimited prints you desire...WHEN you desire. I will include those edited images I use for my web site, at no additional charge. This does not include any printed photos. Optional prints will be made available, for an additional cost. I will make one CD per session.

High School Seniors -$50.00 -OR- ($100 Fall/Spring - TWO SESSIONS)
This option allows you to budget your senior year and make the choice of one or two sessions. Don't spend hundreds of dollars on sessions and all those $$$ on pictures you can have professionally printed later. This option lets you get a proofed CD, which you will treasure as a keepsake forever...AND the ability to print those you would like to have when it's convenient, not on a timeline your photographer sets or your images are gone forever.

This includes your choice of up to two different sessions, for one special price. Both session, at a location of your choice, within a reasonable travel distance. One session in fall and one in spring, the most beautiful time of year for outdoor portraits. This fee for each session is paid the day of your first session. Each session will be approximately 1 1/2 hours each at one location of your choice, within reason. This package includes a full copyright release of your images (typically 15 to 20 images or more, per session) on an individual CD. These sessions are considered a Mini-Session and the cost for each session is $40. This will include a 45 min session of your child in their costume and a photo CD with all photos taken.

Photography Rules for Parents - Please Read

1. Come to the session with well-rested, well-fed children. Nap times might need to be adjusted on the day of our session for the littlest, or dinner time might have to be a couple hours early. It truly makes a WORLD of difference if you plan your day around our session – even if it means a schedule that is non-typical for your family. A good photographer will interact with your child, play games, chat with them and make them feel comfortable. But we cannot take a tired, hungry, writhing ball of meltdown (can you tell I have had twin toddlers?! ) and create a beautiful portrait!!

2. Don’t prep your child too much for a photo session. Talking about it for days on end (or even all day on the day of the session) only raises the stress level for your child and creates an atmosphere of “you’d better…or else!”. It’s better to let your child become comfortable at the session and have their personality shine through. That said, bring a “backup plan”. If you have wee little ones, bringing a non-messy snack (for babies: puffs, small cookies, etc.) and a drink is essential! For older toddlers, a special snack (something a bit exciting even!) might be just the thing to get that big smile! If your child has a lovey or special friend that you don’t mind being in some photos, it can be a great comfort item. I am not above bribery, but be sure to keep it positive and specific. “Give two beautiful smiles and you get a special treat!” is great.

3. Allow your photographer to interact with your child. Don’t answer for them – or chime in with your own thoughts. The photographer needs to spend a few moments getting comfortable with your child and allowing your child to get comfortable with her. Many times I will ask children questions about what things they like, about their teacher or friends, or find something in common to chat about. It helps to break the ice and allows the photographer to get a sense of your child’s personality.

4. If you have a baby, allow the photographer to interact with her and try to get her to look at the camera and smile. This is a hard one for parents. If there’s a particular thing that “works” – a game, a sound, a word, a song – tell the photographer at the beginning of your session together and allow her to try it with your baby. The goal of the photographer is to get your baby to look directly into the camera. If you are standing to the photographer’s left or right, even slightly, and shouting your baby’s name to get her to look up, she is going to look AT YOU! Why is that a bad thing? Because even though she could be giving the best, most beautiful and perfect smile to you…when you see the photo, it looks like she’s smiling at someone outside the frame. I never really understood this until I started photographing children professionally, but now I notice it all the time. In most studio photos, the children are almost always looking at someone above the camera’s level. My goal as a custom photographer is to capture your child(ren) looking right at me – so that when you see that photo, it looks like they are smiling directly at you every time you look at the picture. You will see the twinkle in their eye, you will see the mischievous grin, you will feel the connection! It is hard to step back and not interact with your own baby – but let the photographer try first. She’ll let you know if she needs help!

5. If your child is between 12 months and 2 1/2 years old, expect your session to be a lot of “follow the baby around”! This age is the most unpredictable. Since bribing, cajoling, and joking doesn’t work yet, we are forced to go with the flow! The best thing to do is to see where he wants to play, sit, stand and then position yourselves around him for a group shot. When he moves, you move! Again, interact like you normally do – if that’s playing peek-a-boo or clapping, we’ll capture it, and maybe a few smiles in the process!

6. If you have older toddlers or elementary school children, allow the photographer some space to work with them. If you “disappear” or hang back a bit, photographers can often work more easily with your child – especially siblings! Trust us, we have interacted with many children and have a few tricks up our sleeves! Oftentimes, children will act up when their parents are around and watching just to get their attention – but they wouldn’t dare misbehave with a stranger! (Just ask their teachers – they are angels at school, right?!) I sometimes take a child by the hand and we take a walk to a new location so that we can start fresh and not have mom and dad watching our every move. Most of the time, I capture the truest smiles that way!

7. Try not to threaten your child or coerce them into smiling. You are most likely not going to get a genuine smile if you’ve just told them that they must smile or you will ~~beat them within an inch of their lives~~ not take them for ice cream. Please, whatever you do, don’t tell your child to SAY CHEESE! It does not capture their true smile and we’re probably only going to get that smile the rest of the session. (That’s why they call it a cheezy smile!) Your photographer will help with fun things to make your child smile – or you could always just start a tickle fight or say something really silly that makes everyone laugh!

8. Get close. When you stand next to each other, you should always be touching! Wrap your arms around each other or hold hands. Even a few inches of space looks like a wide gap in a picture! I often tell people to, “act like you like each other!” (which always gets people to smile, by the way!) because I want them to be close. Kids sitting on laps, or standing with their arms around their parents legs or shoulders are natural “poses”. Your closeness and love for each other will shine through if you are close to each other when standing or sitting for a photograph.

9. Your job, as parents is to look at the camera and smile when we attempt the big group shot. When your photographer poses you and is doing her best to get the childrens’ attention, don’t look down at the kids!!! My job is to get the baby to smile. My job is to keep the kids looking at me. My job is to see whose head is turned or fingers are in their mouth. Your job is to plaster that (natural!) smile on your face and look at my camera! There have been too many times when I’ve gotten home, downloaded a family session, and found that by the time I got all three or four kids looking at the camera and smiling, the mom and dad had dropped their smiles or were “just checking” to see if the kids were smiling. So, I either have a great shot of mom and dad with wild monkeys or beautiful children with parents who look completely over it! Remember to just look at the camera and smile – your photographer will do the rest!!

10. Be yourselves and try to have fun! The absolute best family photographs are those where the family looks comfortable and connected. If you are silly, be silly during your session. If dad is the comedian, by all means, bring on the jokes! If your kids like to play Ring around the Rosy (or Superheroes!), let’s get to it early on in the session so that we can capture your family being you. After all, that’s what you want to remember in ten or twenty years, right?

Today we joined our community at Navy Lake, in Millington TN for a fantastic fireworks show.

The children were excited. My boys haven't ever seen anything like this, as we have either done fireworks at home, it was illegal in Virginia (although we got away with a little fun occasionally there)...and we chose not to fight the beach crowds.

I haven't ever heard so much ohhh's and ahhhh's from them. They begged us to go back next year, and I have to say it was cheaper than trying to make a big display at home. We had a picnic, got rained on...but still had a great time. I am making a check list of things to bring next year to make pass the time and make it more enjoyable.

Below are a few of the pictures, of the event. According to the Bluejacket (Navy's weekly news)...there were 10,000 of us weathering the rain to watch the show.

This is the week to show off people hard at play. This theme is very open - it can be a child playing in the sand, a hubby strumming his guitar, and older child participating in a sport or a friend sewing their latest creation. Whatever you think fits the theme of "play"...just make sure that there is a human face showing in your photo entry as well.

This is the second opportunity I have had to photograph this little lady. She is so precious. She had lots of fun running back towards the camera.

I have known Lizzy since before she was born. Last year, she married, and became Allen's wife. Now, she and Allen are expecting their first little miracle. I can't wait to meet Baby Tyler. This photo was taken using "the angle above", Luckily my new Nikon has the flip screen and I was able to hold the camera over my head and still see what I was doing.

These are part of a photo shoot last week with Baby "K". I just love his big blue eyes, and how alert he was. Doesn't those eyes and little smile just melt your heart. Babies are just so precious?

I look forward to spending time with his family in a few weeks doing family portraits.

On Saturday, October 17th, several Girl Scouts had the opportunity to visit Christian Brother's University. While they were there the "Society of Women Engineers" taught the girls about different fields in the engineering. They got to build simple motors, and design their very own gliders. This program is usually for high school students, but our fifth through middle school girls grasp the concept and ran with it. The instructors were amazed at their thoughts and concepts far surpassed what they typically see from high school students. WAY TO GO Girl Scouts!!!

Today my grandmother turned 81 years young. Several years ago she has a mild stroke, but to this day she still mows her own grass, loves to work in her flower beds, and lives life as best she can. I love and admire her. She's old fashioned and quirky, but has the best intentions. What a blessing. It puts butterfly kisses in my heart to see with her great grandchildren and see her smile.

Every year the children get to visit with their grandpa. It is always seems so short, but we have a wonderful time, and so enjoy his visits. This year we went to a couple of different favorites of the children. I will enclose more pictures in another post.

The sky was dark enough thirty minutes before these were taken that our street light came on in our front yard. These pictures were all taken within twenty minutes of each other. It's amazing the beauty God shares with us. His grace is sufficient. By the way there were no edits to these accept for resizing and watermarking...the sky went from orange to pink within twenty minutes.

How to prepare for your photography session

HOW TO BEST PREPARE FOR YOUR FAMILY OR CHILD’S PORTRAIT SESSION

TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Schedule your portrait session during your family is best/refreshed time of day. Choose a time when your child is upbeat time of day, after naps and feedings, so that he/she can enjoy the experience. Choose a time and day that considers your family’s schedule and habits. Tired and Cranky does not make for a photo session, and you want to get the best experience for your time and efforts.

Arrive 10-15 minutes before your session. Use this time to relax and enjoy a little bit of a calming period before the camera starts clicking.

BE OPEN MINDED
Sometimes a frown, a wail or even a sleeping baby can make a great portrait. Don't shy away from capturing a variety of expressions that capture your child/baby's personality.

MAKE IT PERSONAL
Bring along necessary items to help keep your child happy and clean, including diapers, wipes, snacks, favorite toys and blankets. Bring along some personal props -costumes, hats, or toys that showcase your child's personality.

Consider what to wear to best capture both age and personality. You will also want to consider bringing in personal items that have special meaning or highlight the occasion.

IT’S ALL RELATIVE
Include other people in portraits with your baby or child. Consider poses such as: Holding hands with mom and dad or big sister kissing her new baby brother on the nose. You will cherish these images for years to come. And don't forget your pets. They're part of the family too.

MIX UP THE WARDROBE
Be sure to try outfits the day before the photo shoot so that you are positive: things fit properly, there are no spots or stains, any loose belt loops are tacked down and/or missing buttons are replaced. Iron out the wrinkles as necessary, on some occasions these cannot be retouched. There is nothing worse than getting to a photo shoot and realizing the baby, child, or other family member has outgrown a favorite outfit you planned to use.

When picking out your child's wardrobe, think bold and bright, something simple, no busy stripes or patterns. For family portraits, it's best to dress everyone in the same style, color or mood.

Bring a variety of outfits with you. I suggest a variety of casual, formal, or something to reflect the personality of your child, yourself, and your family’s personality. It will help us to capture your family's true self. Since some portraits may show the child from head to toe, make sure your children wear matching shoes and socks or consider going barefoot.

Browse your favorite magazines for poses and looks, and share your preferences with the photographer. During the session, your photographer will try a variety of classic and contemporary poses to best capture the moment.

Make a gift list of the names of friends and family and what you would like to give them, that way, you’re sure to order enough portraits. You’ll also be ready to start sharing your portraits right away.

A little planning and preparation is your key to a successful portrait session; the photographer will review and bring all the choices together for you, ensuring memorable results.

SENIOR AND INDIVIDUAL PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS

WHAT DO I WEAR?
When choosing your outfits, the most important thing is that you like them. You'll want as much variety as possible. Most seniors choose some casual and some dressy outfits. Avoid sleeveless and very short-sleeved shirts, because upper arms can be very distracting - especially women's.

GUYS - For more traditional portraits, a suit or sport coat with a tie is good. Medium to dark sweaters photograph well. For casual and outdoor photos, comfort is the rule – jeans, shirts, sweaters, shorts and sweatshirts.

GIRLS – Bring the colors and outfits you feel best in – dresses (even formals), sweaters and lace for the more traditional look, bright colors, skirts, jeans, and shorts for a more casual look. If you like an outfit, it's probably because you look good in it!

SHOES – Often shoes will show, so they should complement your clothing: changes may be necessary with different clothing styles. Many prefer barefoot poses.

WHAT ELSE CAN I BRING?
Here's where you can start having some fun! Priscilla Leggett Photography works hard to bring out the unique parts of your personality in your portraits. Bring your favorite hat, musical instrument, pet, sunglasses, hobby, letter jacket, car, motorcycle, uniform, sports equipment, class ring or anything else you feel would show off the real you. No idea is too crazy!

CAN I BRING SOMEONE WITH ME?
Absolutely! Some people find it more comfortable to bring Mom or Dad, a friend, brother or sister along to help ease the "camera jitters." You are always welcome to bring someone with you.

WHAT ABOUT A SUNTAN?
Too much sun darkens your skin unnaturally, dries out your hair, makes skin appear shiny and greasy and shows bags under your eyes. Strap marks will show as white marks on bare shoulder poses. These on some occasions cannot be retouched. Keep your tan even. Don't overdo the sun for a portrait – it looks great, but only in moderation. Reschedule your appointment if burned.

WHAT ABOUT MY HAIR?
Try to have your hair cut and/or permed at least one week before your session, to give it a chance to "fill in" a little. Don't try a radically different haircut or style – chances are you won't feel it expresses the "real you." Wait until you have seen your previews before trying something new.

WHAT ABOUT MAKEUP (guys, you too)?
Here's a quick hint that will greatly enhance your portraits: just before your session, stand two feet in front of a mirror. Dab a small amount of cover-up makeup on any noticeable blemishes. That's it – if they're gone in the mirror, they'll be gone in your photographs. GIRLS – keep your makeup natural and fresh! GUYS - a fresh shave is a must. If you have a beard or mustache, make sure it's neatly trimmed. Your photographer will do her best to proof these blemishes, usually with success however, on some occasions these cannot be retouched.

WHAT ABOUT GLASSES?
If you wear glasses most of the time, you'll want to wear them in your portrait. To eliminate glare and reflections, call your optician and arrange to borrow a pair of empty frames like yours, or have the lenses removed from your own glasses. Most opticians will gladly do this for free (make sure you give them plenty of notice). This totally eliminates glare and distortion and is the most important way to improve your portraits if you wear glasses. It doesn't take much effort, and it sure makes your pictures look better! Glare on lenses is something that is rarely correctable, and should be taken into consideration before your portrait session.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?
Summer and autumn showers come and go quickly – it might be raining where you are, but sunny here. If the weather seems to pose a problem, we'll call you. If you don't hear from us just before your session, assume that your appointment is still on! It's easier for us to reschedule the outdoor portion of your session instead of the entire session.

HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I BRING?
The only thing you need to bring to your session is your session fee (unless you have already prepaid it). This covers the cost of the photographer, plus the expenses for your portrait session. It does not include any photographs, but it does include the best senior photography you can get anywhere! (Remember to bring any applicable coupons).

WHEN WILL MY PREVIEWS BE READY?
Your proofs will normally be ready for viewing within one week, depending on my schedule. You can also view your previews online on a personalized slideshow at an arranged. This slideshow can be put on a CD can be taken from the studio for a few days, but a $50 down payment is required and will be applied towards your final order, reminder that these photos will NOT be print quality. If you just want to purchase a CD, other limitations apply, see package information.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT MY PORTRAIT SESSION?
First, expect to have a great time, because you will! It's okay to be a little nervous at first, but you'll soon relax with our easygoing manner and creative photography!

Plan on arriving fifteen minutes before your scheduled time, dressed in one of your outfits. This will also allow you time to freshen up. We will spend a few minutes with you going over your clothing choices. Remember, we want you to have fun – and being late will only result in your feeling rushed and having less time spent on your photography.

Bring your favorite music. You are welcome to bring your own CD player or a radio, and don’t forget fresh batteries for your on location photo session. We like all kinds of music.

Be sure to wear one of your outfits to save time. Pick the one that you consider more traditional. Its okay to bring more than the recommended number of outfits if you're not sure what would look best – we will help you pick the most photogenic ones.

I recently moved from Virginia to Tennessee. I am in the process of changing my former blog name. I was known in Virginia as PAL Around Scraps 'N Photography.
